Arley Berryhill
Arley has been making dolls, both cloth and sculpted, for the past 12 years. With a background in art, design, theater, fashion, and costuming, he feels all his skills are being utilized in doll making.  For the past 30 years, Arley has made a living creating costumes for film, television, stage, commercials, the circus, and night clubs. His dolls have won several awards, he has a passion for beads and embellishment (his beaded pieces have been shown in Seattle’s art galleries), he has made hats and masks on a number of Broadway shows (including “The Phantom of the Opera”, puppets for the Jim Henson Muppet Shop, character costumes for Disneyland, and show-girl costumes in Las Vegas.

Face Drawing Workshop # 8, 57, 75
Learn how to draw doll faces on paper. Students will be given flesh-colored paper, face templates, and handouts explaining proper face drawing proportions. Techniques include tricks for drawing eyes, nose, and lips. Plus how to shade and highlight your face drawing for a three-dimensional look. At the end of class, Arley will explain how to scan your finished doll head drawings, and print your doll faces on fabric with your computer. Students will leave with a finished face drawing, ready to reproduce on fabric. Bring: scissors, pencil with eraser, small ruler/straight edge for drawing lines, colored pencils and/or pastel chalk for shading, micron or gel pens for defining lines, white gel pen or pencil for eyes, and scrap paper for practice drawing.  Note: This is a 2-hour hands-on workshop and the class fee is $10 in advance or $13 at the door. Beading On Fabric # 17, 49, 84
Join us for an hour of beading. Learn four or five basic beading stitches on hooped fabric. Arley will teach you how to embroider fabric using seed beads, 8mm beads, sequins, and gem stones. Students will be given a small fabric motif and a variety of beads, sequins, and stones for you to embellish. Students leave with a sampler fabric of the different beading stitches, and an embellished motif. Kit Fee is $15 and includes fabric and beads. There will be extra supplies for you to borrow, including embroidery hoops. You bring: thread scissors, beading needle (or very thin sewing needle), beading thread (Nymo, Silamide, or poly/cotton sewing thread) in a neutral or gray color. Class limited to 25 students.

Making Doll Hands # 26, 40, 94
Learn with Arley how to make natural looking, feminine cloth hands. Students will be given a stitched cloth hand. We start by making a unique wire armature and learn how to stuff a cloth hand correctly. Also, learn how to “needle sculpt” your hand, using needle and thread. The techniques you will learn in this class can be applied to any doll pattern. No longer will you make dolls with over-stuffed, awkward looking, balloon hands! Kit Fee is $15 and includes a pre-made cloth hand to work with. Bring: 5 craft chenille stems, small wad of stuffing, small stuffing tool - hermostats, chopstick, etc, needle, thread, scissors, small wire cutters. Barbara is owner of Crawford Designs, an established pattern company specializing in hand applique, needle felting, and country collectable dolls. Teaching applique designs and reinventing old sweatshirts into fashion wearables, along with wonderful classes on needle felting, Barbara is developing new techniques to create grander projects and has been featured in both the SQE Professional in 2006 and 2007 and Sew News magazine’s February 2007 issue and just released December 2007 issue introducing everyone to the next levels in needle felting. Everyone has heard of needle felting by now in one form or another. This class addresses techniques in dry needle felting, flat surface design, dimensional, flat surface, braiding, twisting, shading, outlining, appli-felting, complete surface needle felting, wet felting, tools that are used, what’s great, what’s not, care of garments, surfaces that can be needle felted, and more. Knowledge is power, and this class was set up to empower you in all the techniques and help you decide not only on techniques, but fabrics as well that can be used.

Learning About Appli-Felting # 16, 56, 93
Okay, so I made up the name along with this technique. In this class you learn the two techniques of appli-felting. Combining applique work with needle felting both layering, and dimensional work. And when we say learn, we mean work - the best way to learn anything is to try it for yourself. Applique patterns and needle felting patterns are interchangeable, so, we have decided to integrate the two along with hand embroidery to create a unique technique called flat surfaced dimensionals, and reaching another level in dry needle felting. By incorporating these 2 or even 3 mediums, you can create some really beautiful wearables! This is a really beautiful way to jazz up an older wardrobe. We will supply the fabrics, wools, and notions to work with - you just make sure you bring scissors with you.

“Oil Felting” - the look of oil painting using wool roving and a barbed needle. This is a new technique we are introducing by using hand-dyed wool roving to create the shading and the foam base to create the dimension. Do you know how to measure for the shoulder slope? Why is the side seam measurement so important? And you really need both front and back measurements rather than all around measurements! Of course there is also the troublesome crotch area! Learn all of the techniques of a master fitter and the necessary measurements that must be taken for a fit that stands out in the crowd!
